Welcome to Kununurra, a vibrant and diverse community. The town of Kununurra is the youngest and largest of the towns in the shire of Wyndham East Kimberley.
Recognising the challenge for newcomers of finding networks and establishing a new life in a small town, Kununurra Neighbourhood House compiled these pages as part of a 'welcome pack' for new residents. We have listed some information about community activities, community groups and contact details for services within the town to get you settled in. New to Kununurra and the Kimberley
If you are new to Kununurra and the Kimberley the following might be useful information.
Dental
Kununurra Wyndham Dental Clinic 9168 1529 – Please note that they are usually booked two weeks in advance although there may be emergency appointments available.
Banks
There are four banks in Kununurra which include:
• National Australia Bank (NAB)
• Commonwealth Bank (CBA)
• BankWest
• Westpac
You may wish to keep a little bit of cash as a backup in case the power is out or the lines are damaged during the wet season.
Clothing
there are several clothing stores in town including Tucker-box and VA's. Kununurra Neighbourhood House also runs a community Op-Shop with lots of clothing items.
Supermarkets
There are two supermarkets in Kununurra and both allow cash withdrawal.
• Coles Supermarket
• Tuckerbox Supermarket
Weather
Kununurra has the wet and dry season. The wet season between November to April is also when there can be tropical cyclones. Cyclones can be severe and bring destructive winds, torrential rainfall, flooding, dangerous storm surge and heavy swells. During cyclones, being outside can be deadly. This includes driving a vehicle or being in a boat. Cyclones can intensify rapidly. Stay safe by having a cyclone plan, a safe place to shelter, supplies and know how to stay informed.
heavy rain in the region can cause Kununurra can become cut off by floods and can last for several days. It is best to stock up your pantry and freezer with a little extra food in the lead up to the wet.
Postal services
Australia Post does not deliver mail in Kununurra. Mail has to be collected from the Post Office at 89 Coolibah Drive and is open Monday to Friday between 8 am and 5 pm.
Power and water
Horizon Power is our regional electricity provider and can be contacted on 1800 267 926.
Upon arrival in Kununurra you will need to transfer the electricity account for you new property into your own name.
In case of Faults/Emergency/Supply Interruption please contact Horizon Power on 13 23 51.
Water Corporation supply water to homes in town and also manage the waste water.
There is no mains gas in Kununurra and some properties use LPG gas for cooking and sometimes hot water.
LPG gas is supplied in gas cylinders and there are two businesses in Kununurra that deliver full and remove the empty gas cylinders.

Rubbish Bins
Rubbish Bins are emptied on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday mornings depending on where you live.
• Monday - In Lakeside, rubbish bins are emptied every Monday.
• Tuesday - In the commercial, industrial or Coolibah Drive areas, rubbish bins are emptied every Tuesday.
• Wednesday - In the balance of residential areas of Kununurra, rubbish bins are emptied on Wednesday.

The town has three mobile phone networks: Telstra, Vodafone and Optus. Mobile phone coverage is patchy throughout the Kimberley region and coverage is usually lost upon leaving the town area.

Miriwoong Country
Kununurra is situated on the traditional lands of the Miriwoong people. The name Kununurra means "big water" in the Miriwoong language, and refers to the nearby Lake Kununurra and the Ord River.
